UCI DCE Summer 2017 Resident Advisor Job Description

The following job description outlines the functions of a Resident Advisor. While this description is general enough to apply to all RAs, individual RAs may be expected to perform additional functions that meet the specific needs of a given apartment community.

 

Community Development

  • Work cooperatively with students to create an environment which respects the rights of others and promotes consideration of individual needs in an International group living environment.

  • Promote the respect and integrity of race, ethnicity, religion, culture, gender, sexual orientation and all other differences within the community.

  • Assist residents in developing cross-cultural awareness and sensitivity. Identify and articulate North American values and assist residents in their transition to a new culture.

  • Encourage positive interaction between residents to build community in a limited time frame.

  • Assist the professional and other student staff in meeting the needs of the community. 

  • Conduct regular community meetings.

 

Student Development

  • Develop positive relationships of trust by communicating with residents on a weekly basis.

  • Support the diverse populations in your community by advocating for their individual needs.

  • Be sensitive to the needs, concerns and problems of the residents.

  • Demonstrate sensitivity to differences in lifestyle and ethnic/cultural background.

  • Support residents in their personal growth by assisting them to develop skills and communicate in English in such areas as problem-solving, interpersonal communication, and conflict resolution.

  • Mediate conflicts between roommates or within the community.

  • Maintain confidentiality.

  • Act as a facilitator, giving assistance and guidance to students in need.

  • Understand and participate in disaster response procedures.

  • Manage crisis in a proactive manner and respond immediately to safety and health emergencies from residents..

 

 Resource and Referral

  • Maintain general awareness of the full range of DCE and campus services including, but not limited to, personal, financial, health, academic, security, recreational and vocational.

  • Refer residents to resources when appropriate.

  • Make literature and communications regarding resources available to residents on a routine basis.

 

Programming

  • Plan, develop and implement a variety of social, cultural, academic and recreational programs each quarter for the residents in an effort to meet students’ needs and interests.

  • Encourage and support participation in community events and DCE activities.

 

Scheduling

  • Up to 10 hours per week of outside activity is allowed, including other employment, extra-curricular, or co-curricular activity. All time commitments need to be discussed with and approved by supervisor in advance.

  • Resident Advisors may not participate in any outside work or activities except as appropriate and approved by the supervisor during orientation, training, Welcome Week and closing periods.

  • Carry an on call duty cellphone on a weekly rotation and respond to resident concerns and emergencies.

  • Provide coverage on evenings, weekends and holidays as assigned.

  • While on duty, RAs are not restricted to the premises but must be available to quickly respond to resident’s needs.

  • Applicants must commit to the entire duration of the employment period (June 5, 2016 – September 10th, 2017).

  • Respond to situations with sound and sober mind while on duty.

  • Be regularly available to residents, especially on weeknights and weekends. Schedule and communicate set hours where you will be home and available to assist residents.

  • Inform supervisors in advance of any extended absence from campus, especially when it may interfere with other job responsibilities.

  • Avoid conflict of interest situations as a result of employment or extra-curricular activities.

  • Remain in the housing area at the end of each quarter until all assigned residents have been properly checked out and other Resident Advisor responsibilities are completed.

 

Policy Education and Enforcement

  • Understand Housing and DCE policies and guidelines. 

  • Educate residents on these policies and guidelines, their rationale, and the conduct process.

  • Consistently respond to behavior which is inappropriate or in violation of Housing or DCE policies.

  • Document and communicate incidents to appropriate professional staff.

 

Administration

  • Conduct apartment/dorm walkthroughs and assist with move-in and move-out of residents.

  • Complete various administrative tasks accurately, completely and promptly (such as weekly reports, incident reports, maintenance requests, etc.).

  • Conduct a regular walk-through of apartments/dorms to identify maintenance, custodial, safety/security issues and distribute notices.

  • Make contact with supervisor daily to maintain open communication.

  • Meet on a weekly basis with supervisor to communicate general problems and concerns influencing students and the community.

  • Attend weekly Resident Advisor staff meetings (time to be determined), attend scheduled staff training, and participate in required staff activities.

  • Maintain professional working relationships with other staff members. Work to resolve concerns or conflicts with other staff. Discuss situations with supervisor as appropriate.

  • Work in the Housing Office as needed. Assist with administrative tasks (responding to emails, processing paperwork, making notices, preparing for check-ins and checkouts, etc.). Provide customer service support at the front desk.

  • Interact with and build relationships with office staff.

  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

 

Leadership

  • Lead residents by personal example in academic commitment, moral character, emotional maturity, community standards and cultural tolerance.

  • Have good interpersonal and public relations skills and be customer-service oriented.

  • Display attitudes and behavior which support the policies and philosophy of Housing and UCI.

  • Uphold and follow all Housing and DCE policies.

 

Academic Standards

  • 2.4 cumulative GPA at the time of application. Resident Advisors cannot be on academic warning or probation at any time during either the application or employment period.

 

Compensation

  • Housing – Resident Advisors may be placed in an apartment located near UCI campus or in an on-campus dormitory.

  • Resident Advisors placed in an apartment located near UCI campus will have a private bedroom in a fully furnished two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment. One or two International students will be assigned to the other bedroom.

  • Resident Advisors placed in an on-campus dormitory will have a private bedroom with private bathroom and access to a shared kitchen. Up to 32 international students will be assigned to the dormitory.

  • $400 monthly stipend to cover the cost of food, UCI parking, etc.  No hourly wage.

 

General Qualifications

  • Resident Advisors must be unmarried undergraduate students, at least 18 years old at the time of hire.Attend Resident Advisor Training From June 5th – June 16th.

  • Attendance at Summer Resident Advisor Training is mandatory. There are no exceptions.

  • Attend an orientation and training sessions during spring quarter before summer employment begins.

  • Proper visa status with work permission is required at the time of application for International students.

  • Must possess a valid California Driver License.

  • Upon training and certification, drive university vehicles safely and responsibly.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience communicating and interacting with international populations.

  • One year minimum on-campus living experience.

  • Leadership experience explaining, interpreting, and enforcing guidelines and policies.
